His hair had always been long. It extended past his shoulders, was somewhat unkempt, and was thick. Some people liked his easygoing, creative appearance, but it also brought with it a lot of criticism, including inquiries about when he had “finally cut it” and the occasional misidentification by complete strangers who mistakenly believed he was someone else.
He didn’t mind, though. The lengthy hair seemed to be a part of him for a while. Until it didn’t.
He went into a barbershop one day and requested a big alteration without alerting many people. He wanted it short, not trimmed or styled in a different way. Very brief.
The change was striking as the barber worked.
Parts of his face that no one had seen in years were exposed as inch after inch slid away. His jawline was prominent. His eyes appeared more radiant. He even adopted a different stance, as if he were becoming an other persona.
Not only did he appear different when he left, but he also felt different. lighter. more assured. And the way his pals responded when they saw him says it all.
“Hold on, is that you?”
The haircut was more than simply a fashion statement. It was a change—a new beginning. And he accepted it wholeheartedly for the first time in a long time.
